Our tooth comprises of three layers Enamel, Dentin & Pulp. When the decay or caries is present within the first two layers, dental filling can be done to restore the tooth. But when the caries reaches the Pulp, it causes inflammation or infection of pulp, where the Endodontic Treatment or Root Canal Treatment has to be done. Followed by RCT, Dental Filling is done and the tooth is covered by a Crown.
If RCT is not done, then the inevitable option left is Tooth Extraction.
What are the Conditions when RCT is to be done?
Root Canal Treatment is done with the following indications:
· Overly sensitive tooth to sweets, cold water or hot tea.
· Dental caries or decay has gone very deep.
· There is pain on tooth on chewing every time.
· There has been an injury to the tooth, either apiece has broken off, or there is pain after injury.
· There is pain in the tooth without any plausible reason or tooth cavity (Irreversible Pulpitis)
· Pain in the tooth (normally it is a throbbing constant pain that is the typical symptom of a dental abscess or infection of root)
· The tooth is needed as an abutment in a bridge.
· Severe gum loss around the tooth leading to exposure of the roots.
How is the RCT procedure done?
Root Canal Treatment is done by an Endodontist or Root Canal Specialist. During the procedure:
· Creating an access to the pulp chamber after clearing all the caries from the tooth.
· Removing all the infected / necrosed pulp from the roots.
· After clearance and termination of pain, the root is filled with inert material (GP points).
· Restoration with filling and crown / cap.
It may be a multi-step procedure, as the roots are cleared in stages and filled only after complete eradication of pain and infection. During the treatment, antibiotic may be prescribed by the Endodontist to control the infection under the root, along with pain.
What are the Precautions after RCT?
After a Root Canal Treatment, since the blood and nerve supply of the tooth is removed; the tooth tends to become brittle. That means it can break up into pieces upon undue load. That is the reason it highly recommended to get a Crown / Cap as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the tooth.
Is the Treatment Painful?
Although the patient comes with infection and pain, the treatment is pain-free as it is done under Local Anesthesia.
My Pain went away; do I still need to go through RCT?
Sometimes after a few days of pain and swelling, the tooth becomes pain-free. It doesn’t mean the tooth has healed up. It means that the pulp has decomposed or necrosis is done, and not treating the tooth would lead to spread of infection in the bone below the roots of tooth and also bone loss in future.
What is Single-Visit RCT?
With the addition of Rotary Endodontics, commonly single-rooted anterior teeth and the teeth with less infection can be cleared, cleaned, and filled in the same sitting. Single-Visit RCT’s have best results when done with Rotary Endodontics (A wireless hand piece system that can auto-sense the root length and prepare the canal with maximum accuracy).
